How it actually happens

One email.
One very bad month.

Most small-business breaches aren’t movie-style hacking. They’re a convincing email, a reused password, and nobody double-checking. Here’s how a common scam plays out.

Example scenario: a composite of a common pattern called business email compromise. Names and times are illustrative.

  1. MON · 8:14 AM

    An email from your supplier

Same name, same logo, same signature. “We changed banks — please send this month’s payment to our new account.”

  2. MON · 8:31 AM

It looks routine, so it gets paid

Your bookkeeper updates the details. Nothing seems off — the attacker has been reading the real email thread for weeks after guessing a reused password.

  3. 3 WEEKS LATER

    The real supplier calls

“Where’s our payment?” The money went to a criminal’s account and is long gone. And the attacker still has access to your inbox.

What would have stopped it

  • Two-step login on email. The stolen password alone wouldn’t have opened the inbox.
  • A call-to-confirm rule. Any bank change gets verified by phone, using a number you already have.
  • Email authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC). Makes look-alike emails far easier to catch.

About Chance

“I’ve run a small business. I know you don’t have time for jargon or money for enterprise pricing.”

I’m Chance. Before IT, I ran a landscaping business, drove a truck, and worked on farms. Now I work in healthcare IT, where security isn’t optional.

I started Dark Fire Security after watching too many local businesses get blindsided by breaches that were entirely preventable, then finding out the help they needed was priced out of reach.

Faith and family are my foundation. When I show up, I speak plain English, tell you the truth, and never sell you something you don’t need.

Common questions

Straight answers.

Still unsure? Ask in the form below. There’s no such thing as a dumb security question.

Is the assessment really free?

Yes. You get a documented look at your network with findings in plain English and a prioritized fix guide. No obligation to buy anything afterward.

Do I need to be technical?

Not at all. Everything is explained in plain English, and the fix guide is written so you, or whoever helps with your tech, can follow it step by step.

Will you try to sell me something?

No. You’ll get an honest picture of where you stand. If a paid checkup would genuinely help, I’ll explain why. The decision is yours.

Is it safe to let you scan my network?

Nothing happens without your written permission, and we agree on exactly what gets checked beforehand. Findings are shared only with you.

What areas do you serve?

Nashville, Ashland City, Clarksville, Springfield, and the rest of Middle Tennessee.
